The Sewing Story

handmade whale zipper pouchWhen I was quite young, I learned the basics of the art of sewing from my mama. I watched her make many of my outfits, and she let me help. I didn’t do much for awhile, but as I grew the urge to create things from fabric began to tick softly inside me. By the time I was 10 years old, I was creating outfits for my American Girl dolls and making change purses to sell to my friends at school (for a couple shiny quarters apiece!). As I grew, so did my sewing skills, and so did my love of the art.

Most nights, as I’m falling asleep, my head spins with new ideas for fabric choices, color combinations, and patterns. Sewing is what I do to express myself and to escape. I can’t think of much that feels better than wearing clothes and accessories you’ve made yourself; nothing really compares.

This blog is a documentation of some of my processes, experiments, and creations. I hope that through sharing my creative vision, I can inspire others to make new and exciting things. Sewing is sometimes regarded as much less than the art form that it is, and I hope that future generations continue to appreciate the value of creating things with one’s own hands, because it is truly a remarkable experience.

Very inspirational story, my grandma taught me how to sew when I was about 6 (I’m now 27) and it has stuck with me ever since. I too fall asleep with ideas spinning! Thanks for sharing.

My 10 year old daughter wants to get into sewing. I never was very good at so it will be a great learning process for the both of us.

I’m looking forward to teaching my daughter and her children all about sewing. I hope that it does not become a “forgotten art” so to speak so good on you for putting this blog together.
